SCITT Director

Chris entered teaching after a successful career in process engineering.  A trained secondary science teacher, he teaches all disciplines to Key Stage 4. and Physics to A-level. He has held whole school responsibility for various areas and was appointed SCITT Director in 2015.  He delivers training for the partnership and other organisations nationally, particularly focusing on curriculum development, subject knowledge and leadership training.


SCITT Administrator

Jo started as a 17-year-old apprentice at Hull College, completing her NVQ in Business Administration.  She then took on a variety of roles in industries such as consumer liaison and the steel industry.  It was employment at a Hairdressing College which allowed Jo to enter the world of education, first working with apprentices, then in mainstream with Sirius Academy North.

Jo started with the partnership in 2016.

Outside of work, Jo is a keen walker, accompanying her little dog, Mojo.  She also is a fan of high end cooking.


Subject Lead - Geography

Amy currently holds the post of Head of Geography and ITT co-ordinator at Hornsea School and Language College. 
She graduated from Hull University with a BA honours degree in Human Geography in 2003 and completed a PGCE the year after also at Hull University. She has been teaching for 14 years and has held her current post as head of department for the last 8.


Subject Tutor - Physical Education

Cosi entered teaching after being a student of Physical Education at Hull College.
Trained as a secondary Physical Education Teacher through gaining a Certificate of Education and then a Batchelor of Arts Degree in Education.
Cosi started his profession at St. Anne’s Junior High School in 1983. This was followed by posts at The Dales Junior High; Perronet Thompson; Amy Johnson; Pickering High School Sports College; and now Sirius Academy West.
Cosi has spent his whole teaching career in Hull and has started his 35th year, gaining much experience through various roles. This included roles as a mentor and director of the previous General Teaching Practice Programme. 
Cosi’s involvement in sport has been extensive and has seen him gain a UEFA ‘A’ Licence in Football; been involved as a manager for Hull Schools and Humberside U.16 County Football for twenty -seven years; English Schools F.A Coach at U.15 and U.18 levels; Director of Hull City Centre of Excellence; East Riding County Football Representative for the Football Association; and reserve team manager at North Ferriby United.
Cosi’s greatest sporting achievements have been in football in winning a national trophy with Humberside County at U.16 level and a ‘World Youth Tournament’ in Paris in 1998 with an English Schools U.15 Team.


Pastoral Lead

Sarah Steels has been teaching Science in Hull since 2008 and has worked in a range of schools. Her passion for teaching stems from her own interest in learning and development. She has held pastoral and departmental roles in a variety of middle leadership positions and is currently lead practitioner of Science at Sirius Academy North.  Sarah’s strength for behaviour for learning comes from the background she has in building relationships with even the most difficult children. Sarah is able to advise on career progression and issue relating to personal well-being.  


Subject Tutor - English

Heidi is a Lead Practitioner of English and an SLE.  With over 20 years teaching and managerial experience, Heidi is a key member of the Teaching and Learning Strategy group and has valuable and extensive experience in lesson planning, lesson observations and teaching and learning strategies.  She is a coach, ITT mentor and has led highly successful CPD for both primary teachers (raising attainment at KS2 and effective transition from KS2 to KS3) and for secondary colleagues (effective assessment, student engagement, quality marking and feedback and Stretch & Challenge for all).


Subjest Tutor - Drama and Theatre Studies

Julia Quillin is Director of Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA) and teaches drama at Sirius Academy West. Julia has a lifelong background in drama and the performing arts in her youth as a member of Hull Truck Youth Theatre and Northern Theatre Company. She attained the highest grades in both GCSE Drama and A Level Theatre Studies before progressing to study Drama and Theatre Studies at Royal Holloway, University of London, one of the premier drama departments in the county.


On graduating Julia took some professional acting roles including performing in a run of a Noel Coward musical at the Sadler’s Wells but soon decided to make the move into Film and Television production working in the film industry in London for 10 years.


On returning to Hull, Julia trained as an English teacher then as an NQT took on the role of Drama Co-ordinator developing drama opportunities within the English curriculum such as participation in Shakespeare’s School Festival and National Theatre Connections. Julia was also awarded a Masters in Teaching and Learning from the University of Hull and her final dissertation was on fostering drama within the KS3 English Curriculum. Julia was instrumental in developing curriculum based drama at Sirius, establishing the CAPA Department leading to drama being taught as a discrete subject at KS3 and KS4. In 2013 Julia was appointed Assistant Director CAPA and then in 2015 became the Curriculum Director for CAPA.


Subject Tutor - Design Technology

Julian is a graduate of Loughborough University where he achieved a 1st Class BA(Hons) degree in Textile Design. He has been teaching for 20 years and is currently based at Bridlington School where he is an Assistant Head, overseeing Art, Design Technology, Performing Arts and Sport. Prior to his current role Julian has been Head of Art, Assistant Head of ADT and most recently ITT/NQT Coordinator. Julian has been the driving force behind Bridlington School being acknowledged for providing outstanding provision for ITT and NQT programmes. Outside of school Julian is a keen sportsman, he currently competes in football and squash in leagues in the East Riding.


Subject Tutor - Computer Science

Laura began her teaching career at Tollbar Academy in 2003. A trained business studies teacher she found myself thrust into the world of ICT after answering a seemingly harmless question in her interview of ‘how are your ICT skills’ with ‘I can find my way round a keyboard!’ A summer holiday of cramming every single ICT qualification possible in at local Learn Direct centres she began and never looked back!

A year later Laura moved to Whitgift School and remained rooted for 13 years. Keen to progress her career she grasped many opportunities that came her way including, progress leader, head of department, transition coordinator, PHSE coordinator and staff governor.  Laura remained within and led the ICT faculty but also delivered Business Studies at KS4.

On the cusp of the emergence of Computer Science, Laura left to have a baby and returned to a lone department of just one. The time had come to move again, this time to Havelock Academy where a team was awaiting and the challenge and upskill to become a Computer Scientist was too good an opportunity to miss. 3 years later, Laura loves Computer Science, teaching and watching pupils solve problems they never thought they could. Laura is an OCR Computer Science marker to go alongside her 10 years of business marking and transferred to team leader within Business Studies.


Subject Tutor - Mathematics

Lois Arnett has been teaching Mathematics in the Hull area since 2014 and has worked in a range of schools. She is currently a lead practitioner of Mathematics at Sirius Academy North. Lois studied A Levels Mathematics after school and completed a degree at Newcastle University in Civil Engineering.  Lois has successfully mentored and coached staff and has complete a Level 2 course in coaching and mentoring. 


Subject Tutor - Art and Design

I decided to stay in education after leaving school where I studied A Level Art, Photography and English Language before gaining a BA in Lens Based Photo Media at Leeds University. After my degree I gained experience in schools as a TA whilst also building a Photography Business, then going on to complete my teacher training qualification in Hull. Since then I have worked in schools in both Harrogate where I was the BTEC Quality Leader for the school and trained as a Lead Practitioner through the SSAT in Hull. I have been running the Art Department at Sirius Academy West for 4 years, developing teaching and learning within the school and training Art teachers as a Subject Tutor



Shalina is a graduate of Hull University with a degree in History. On completion of the degree she worked at Wilberforce College as a support tutor, before returning back to Hull University to complete a PGCE. She spent time teaching at a small school in Lincoln, before returning to Hull and working at Sirius Academy West. Having mentored many student teachers who went on to great success, she took the post of History Tutor in 2016.


Subject Tutor - Science

Stephen is a graduate of The University of Hull where he received a Degree is Special Physics in 1998. He then completed a Science PGCE specialising in Physics and starting his teaching career in 1999. During his time in education Stephen has specialised in teaching Physics GCSE and A-level and has also delivered Electronics and Computer science, he has also help Head of Department positions in highly successful Science and Technology departments prior to moving into school leadership.
Stephen’s background in providing CPD has been extensive with time spent as a Teacher Network Coordinator for the Institute of Physics (IOP) and a CPD provider for the Association for science education (ASE) national conferences. Stephen has also had a lead role in Teaching and Learning in his current school.
Through his teaching career Stephen has mentored trainee teachers. Initial holding the position of Physics Mentor for the Hull University PGCE course but more recently as ITT coordinator at Sirius Academy West.
Outside of school he is a keen gamer who enjoys the mental challenge of participating in national competitive tournaments.


SCITT Manager

After completing a law degree and finishing her legal training Kirstin came to work in the education sector by chance. She has been working in schools for 15 years in various roles, though most of this time as an Exams Officer and joined us in January 2015.


Outside of work her life is pretty busy with 3 small children so she enjoys more sedate hobbies like gardening, baking and cake decorating.
